The Problem with Rapid Weight Loss (and What Works!)

It’s easy to get drawn in by weight loss promises: magic drops, 1200-calorie diets, meal-replacement shakes, or influencers selling a “guaranteed fix.” But what's not being said is that rapid weight loss isn’t healthy, and often unsustainable.

Here’s why:

  • You lose more than just fat.
Drastic calorie restriction leads to loss of muscle too, which slows your metabolism, making it harder to maintain your results.
A 2020 study found that rapid weight loss preserved less lean mass and caused a greater drop in metabolic rate than gradual weight loss.

  • It can make you feel toxic.
Your body stores many environmental toxins in fat tissue.  Losing fat too quickly causes those toxins to flood your system, leaving you feeling flat, foggy, and unwell.  According to a 2024 review, rapid fat loss exposes vital organs such as the brain and lungs to these toxins.

  • It doesn’t teach you how to eat.
Pre-packaged shakes, drops, and plans might help you drop kilos short-term, but they don’t help you build long-term habits. Without education and real food, people end up back at square one.

  • Calorie counting is flawed.
Calorie intake is hard to accurately track, and over time, this can create fear around perfectly healthy foods, such as fruit!
I’ve seen many clients become scared of “fattening” foods thanks to these diets.

  • Starvation Can Lead to Binge Eating.
When your body’s chronically deprived, it fights back. I’ve lived it with years of bodybuilding, under-eating, and overtraining.  This lifestyle left me depleted of many nutrients, and in a constant state of fight-or-flight.   I believe it was around this time that I developed Fibromyalgia (which can be caused by a stressful event).

Please Don't Blame Yourself!

These diets didn’t fail because you lacked willpower, they were never going to work long term. They failed YOU!

And they continue to do so for thousands of people trying their hardest to feel better.

What works instead?

  • Balanced blood sugar

  • Wholefood meals you actually enjoy

  • Sustainable habits (not restriction)

  • Supporting your metabolism, not suppressing it
